The UUHA, as an organization, is working to promote humanism within the UUA. You can read about the major initiatives the organization is involved in on the UUHA History and Mission page.
However, we are only going to be successful in our mission if we mobilize grassroots action!
It is you, as an individual, who needs to act in order for us to collectively have a real impact. Here are some ideas to get you thinking. What else would you suggest? Use the comment form below to offer more ideas.
How can you promote UU Humanism?
- Have you created an account on uuha.org so you are on our e-mail list? Have you “liked” our Facebook page and do you participate?
- Are you a supporting member of UUHA and is your membership up-to-date?
- Have you Invited any humanist friends to a UU service or activity? Do you speak positively of UU experiences in the on-line or in-person secular community?
- Do you greet new visitors to your congregation and offer them a positive humanist path to being a UU? Could you wear a “happy humanist” pin, use a UUHA mug or wear a humanist t-shirt to encourage questions about humanism?
- If there’s a humanist group or identifiable activity in your congregation, do they meet openly and as part of the congregation’s program? Is it listed in the UUHA Local Groups list?
- If there’s a humanist group outside the UU congregation, does it work to attract UUs, and to cooperate with congregational programs? Is the group listed in the UUHA Local Groups list?
- If there isn’t a humanist group or activity, could you start one?
- Do you put out humanist pamphlets and books on your visitors’ table and literature table?
- Do you put out a copy of the latest Journal?
- Do you put out UUHA membership brochures?
- Do you submit humanist-perspective articles or letters to the editor to your congregation’s newsletter, community newspaper, district newsletter or UU World? Could you submit a post for our curated community blog?
- Is there a humanist table at your district annual meeting? Would you be willing to run one if we sent you supplies?
- Do you attend GA? Would you be willing to volunteer some time in theUUHA booth? Attend the annual meeting? Wear a UUHA button, t-shirt or ribbon to “advertise” humanism andUUHA?
- Do you attend secular conferences? Could you wear a UU orUUHA t-shirt or jewelry?
- Do you serve on your congregation’s Sunday services or worship committee, or the committee on ministry, or the membership committee to make sure a humanist voice is heard?
- Do you offer yourself as a candidate for congregational, district or UUA office?
- When did you last encourage a humanist inclined young person to attend UU seminary? Or have you considered it yourself?
- Do you help teach the new UU class to ensure that a humanist perspective is included?
- Do you teach in the RE program to ensure our young people get a humanist viewpoint?
